Tennis at the Bainbridge Island Recreation Center

Whether you're just starting out or have years of experience, our tennis program offers something for every player. The Bainbridge Island Recreation Center features four full-size indoor USTA tennis courts available for open court use, lessons, leagues, and ladder match play.

Programs & Instruction

We offer a variety of options for both youth and adults, including:

Recreational Play

Enjoy our beautiful indoor courts year-round. Tennis Members and guests have access to court reservations and casual play opportunities.

 Adult Tennis at BIRC

We use the NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) system to help players find the right clinic level. Please read the descriptions below to determine your rating. If you're unsure, we’re happy to arrange an assessment with one of our instructors.

2.0–2.5: Beginner

  • Needs on-court experience and stroke development.
  • Learning to judge ball direction and swing timing.
  • Struggles with positioning and movement efficiency.
  • Can rally at a slow pace with similar-level players.
  • Beginning to understand singles and doubles positions.

Common Challenges:
Grip issues, inconsistent serve toss, limited net play.

3.0: Advanced Beginner

  • Fairly consistent with medium-paced shots.
  • Limited accuracy and control with different strokes.
  • Basic understanding of lobs, overheads, and volleys.
  • Prefers one grip for all strokes.
  • Common doubles formation: one up, one back.

Common Challenges:
Handling pace/spin, off-center shots, net play discomfort.

3.5: Intermediate

  • Reliable strokes with directional control.
  • Developing depth and shot variety.
  • Improved net comfort and court awareness.
  • Beginning to use mental strategies and spins.

Strengths:
Can rally from baseline, starting to build tactical awareness.

4.0: Advanced Intermediate

  • Dependable strokes with control and depth.
  • Effective use of volleys, lobs, and approach shots.
  • Occasional success with aggressive serving.
  • Strong teamwork in doubles.

Strengths:
Reliable second serve, strategic point construction.

4.5: Advanced

  • Varies pace and spin effectively.
  • Strong court coverage and depth control.
  • Can build game plans around strengths.
  • Powerful and accurate serves.
  • Aggressive net play in doubles.

Strengths:
Wins points off serve/return, may have a signature “weapon.”
